MASIKHULISANE
CRECHE In 2006 ARC became involved in the struggling Masikhulisane Creche
in Samora Machel, Philippi by raising and chanelling funds as well as offering
practical support and mentoring to owner Mirriam Siphondo. To date over R800 000
has been raised for the creche by the Argusx2 and Charity Challenge fundraisers
as well as other donors. In 2009 the creche transformed into Educare Centre as
it became registered by Social Development. (See www.aidsresourcecentre.org.za
for current happenings and photos related).
CHILDRENS
CENTRE AND LAND ACQUISTION On behalf of the Ubomi Trust, ARC is currently
in negotiations to acquire a piece of land in Samora Machel to develop a Childrens
Centre for the poorest children in this community. The project would include:
a free Educare Centre; a church hall for a childrens church on Sundays as
well as to be used for dance, music, sports and holiday activities for all the
children in the community; rooms for counselling and support groups for children;
a kitchen to not only provide food for the children, but also a training kitchen
for parents; 3 safety homes; vegetable and flower gardens. Contact Niki on aidsre@gmail.com
for more detailed document.
CHANNEL
FUNDS AND SUPPORT TO GRASSROOTS PROJECTS Through their networks ARC has
identified certain HIV grassroots projects in dire need. Past involvement has
been supporting families living in the Bush in Mitchells Plain, in the Graveyard
in Maitland and children's parties. In 2006 ARC became involved in the Masikhulisane
Creche in Samora Machel, Philippi, chanelling funds, basic needs and offering
practical and spiritual mentoring. In 2009 ARC became involved in supporting a
group of orphans, the Mkondo Kids, from Langa, Khayletisha and Gugulethu, with
food and basic needs. There are more than 50 boys and girls in this group, ranging
in age from 8 to 18 years. The children have lost both their parents to AIDS,
and currently living with extended family. As they are not HIV positive, these
children often go under the radar, yet are suffering emotionally and physically.
Funds are desperately needed for this group of orphans.
HIV/AIDS WALL
MAPS ARC is the producer of ASK, the Aids Survival Kit wall map for the
Cape and Durban Metropoles, printed in full colour, showing who is doing what
in HIV and where these organisations are located. The First Edition of the Cape
map was printed and distributed in December 2003 and the Second Edition was printed
and distributed in May 2005. The Durban map was launched in 2006. The information
can presently be seen around the cities in businesses as well as at government
offices, schools, clinics, disability offices and other provincial and local departments
(distributed by Dept of Health). It is also displayed in foyers, canteens, toilets
and anywhere where there is 'public' traffic. It has proven a valuable tool for
everyone! MAPPING WEBSITE May 2005 saw the launch of the www.askaidsmap.org.za
website which is comprehensive database list of all HIV support services in the
Cape Metro with maps attached. The information is specifically aimed at the man
in the street needing to find support services he/she requires including where
to get tested. Website searches are by way of AREA you live in or SUPPORT you
require. This site was developed by Henk Blom of Zeplins in conjunction with ARC. |
