EL-SHAMMAH KIBBUTZ
Kibbutz El-Shammah is a multi-purpose community centre at the entrance to a low-income residential area (Roodewal) on the Robertson Road in Worcester. It consists of Gloryland pre-school for 120 children, a Needlework-training centre and clothes shop, a small convenience shop for Roodewal residents selling goods at near cost price, and a community hall. Kibbutz personnel and youth at Risk are housed on the premises

The project provides a range of counselling and training programmes and has a performing arts programme as well. Gangsterism is prevalent in Roodewal, but Kibbutz helps to keep this problem at bay through their crime prevention programmes.

One of the most effective ways of reaching both this community and others throughout South Africa has been through the performing arts. Hence South Roots - the performing arts company of Kibbutz El-Shammah has produced several productions. South Roots offers seminars in Cultural Redemption and Reconciliation and workshops in Community development through the arts.

Broken Shackles

It tells the story of the Cape Coloured people of South Africa, from their roots as the Cape Slaves, through the slavery of Apartheid, and in the current slavery of alcohol, poverty and other forms of degradation. 'A Nation's Glory' is the latest South Roots production, expressing the hope we have for our nation as all people groups rise in its their God given strength.
