ANOTHER
SUCCESSFUL PLATTELKLIP CHARITY CHALLENGE EVENT
R589 000 was pledged
for the Ubomi Childrens Support Centre in Samora Machel, Philippi, in the
Webber Wentzel Platteklip Charity Challenge held on 17th April 2010. The weather
was perfect as 70 super athletes took to running up table mountain 3 to 9 times!
In among them were 3 of our very own athletes from Life Church, Daniel Smith (5
laps), Joseph Chinana (3 laps). and Aaron McKenzie (6 laps) who collectively raising
almost R20 000. It was great to have supporters from Life Church come out and
cheer the athletes on including a group of pre-schoolers from Samora Machel who
cheered, sang and blew their vuvuzelas enthusiastically.
Tatum Prins, a
professional adventure racer, set the pace by ascending the mountain 9 times,
embarrassing the guys, most of whom struggled to do 5 ascents! Each lap is 5.5km
in distance, 760 metres of climbing, and took approximately 2 hours. The route
up Platteklip Gorge includes 800 double size steps over a distance of 2.1km. Once
at the top, the contestants needed to run to the upper cable station, catch a
lift down and then run back to the start at the gorge.
Master fundraisers
and organisers, Anton and Brigitte de Waal and Adam Pike, wanted the challenge
to be steeper than the inaugural event last year, so they increased the number
of summits required from 3 to 5. The harder you make it, the easier it is
to raise money, because people pledge towards lunacy, as opposed to average achievement,
said Anton.
From Ubomi, we would like to say a big thanks to the organisers
who undertook this massive task for putting the event together, marketing it and
now tracking the donations that are coming in from 1000s of individual donors.
We are truly blessed to have them on board!

CHARITY

endurance event called the Platteklip Charity Challenge to raise money to upgrade
creche facilities for Aids affected children in Samora Machel, Cape Town. It is

the creche. They will try to see how many times they can summit Table Mountain
via Platteklip Gorge from sunrise to sunset. You can sponsor them for as little
as R100, and know that you are making a huge difference to someone less fortunate
than you.

LIFE
CONFERENCE The theme for this year's Life Conference was a "life of
Influence"; a conference that is a heart felt experience to what Life Church
is all about. Life Church hosted their 4th annual Conference over the weekend
of the 19th to the 21st of September 2008 focusing on justice and righteousness.
There was a twist in this year's conference - it was not a conference just about
hearing and being empowered by great speakers, but about doing and being the hands
and feet of Jesus. It was not a conference about what you can get out of it, but
what you can give back to people in need.

SEED
PROJECTS At Life Church, we encourage our Life Groups to be involved in
the community that their life group is located. One way of motivating this, is
for them to be involved with Seed Projects. Seed Projects are random acts of kindness
that the life group will do to encourage someone or an organisation and to show
them that we care. It is all based on "See a need; fill the need". On
18 March 2009, all our life groups participated in Seed Projects.
