The Month before the World comes to our doorstep ...

We have a month left before the 2010 FIFA World Cup and people from all over the world will be focussing their attention on South Africa. Ubomi is preparing for the event by organising township outreaches, hosting mission teams and setting up events and fundraisers with a view to raising awareness of our vision.

We want to ensure that Ubomi clearly conveys our motto "God cares, we care, people matter". Do you want to be part of this? Please email me for more information on how you can be involved - carita@ubomi.com

Another successful Platteklip Charity Challenge Event
R589 000 was pledged for the Ubomi Children's Support Centre in Samora Machel, Philippi, in the Webber Wentzel Platteklip Charity Challenge held on 17th April 2010. The weather was perfect as 70 super athletes took to running up Table Mountain 3 to 9 times! Among them were 3 of our very own athletes from Life Church, Daniel Smith (4 laps), Joseph Chinana (3 laps) and Arran McKenzie (6 laps) who collectively raised almost R20 000. It was great to have supporters from Life Church to cheer the athletes on, including a group of pre-schoolers from Samora Machel who sang and blew their vuvuzelas enthusiastically.

Tatum Prins, a professional adventure racer, set the pace by ascending the mountain 9 times, embarrassing the guys, most of whom struggled to do 5 ascents! Each lap is 5.5km in distance, 760 metres of climbing, and took approximately 2 hours. The route up Platteklip Gorge includes 800 double size steps over a distance of 2.1km. Once at the top, the contestants needed to run to the upper cable station, catch a lift down and then run back to the start at the gorge. Master fundraisers and organisers, Anton and Brigitte de Waal and Adam Pike, wanted the challenge to be steeper than the inaugural event last year, so they increased the number of summits required from 3 to 5. "The harder you make it, the easier it is to raise money, because people pledge towards lunacy, as opposed to average achievement", said Anton.

Ubomi would like to say a big thanks to the organisers who undertook this massive task for putting the event together, marketing it and now tracking the donations that are coming in from 1000s of individual donors. We are truly blessed to have them on board!

Iron Man Challenge Feedback
On the 25th of April, the Iron Man Challenge took place at Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth. Over 1800 people competed in a triathlon challenge consisting of a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42.2km run. Warren Wilkinson was one of the contestants - he aimed not only to finish the race but to raise funds for Ubomi. He finished in 15 hours and 45 minutes and raised almost R10 000.

Ubomi would like to thank Warren for being an Ambassador for our charitable trust and for everyone that sponsored him. If you would like to be an Ambassador for Ubomi, please click here and contact the Ubomi office if you need any assistance.

Ubomi attends LIV Banquet in Durban
On the 7th of April 2010, Desiree Liebenberg, Niki Kuys and Carita Neethling, attended the Lungisisa Indlela Village (LIV) Banquet in Durban - the biggest banquet ever to be held at the ICC. LIV hosted a banquet for 4 000 guest to launch their vision for the children's village that they will be building in Durban and to raise funds. The village will consist of 120 homes, sports fields, clinics and a school from crèche through to matric.

The guests included well-known faces such as Shaun Pollock, John Smit, KZN Premier Dr Zwele Mkize and the Watoto Choir. It was a fantastic evening - Desiree, Niki and Carita also had the privilege of visiting the farm where the village will be built and met the first LIV mom and family.

Chi Alpha Mission Team
On the 14th of May, 61 Students from Chi Alpha Ministry in Arkansas, will arrive in Africa to do mission work. They will go in groups of 15 to Lesotho, Zambia, Maputo and Quelimane in Mozambique to volunteer at different churches and partner with them in community outreach.

They will reunite in Cape Town and spend a week at El-Shammah Life Centre in Worcester working with the youth in the community. The final leg of their trip will be spent in Cape Town visiting Life Church.

Each year Matt Carpenter and his team arrive with positive, hard-working attitudes and a passion for God's work. We are excited to host them again and to see God use them in a mighty way to impact the communities we are involved with. Please keep the Chi Alpha team in your prayers for safe travel and for God to bless them abundantly.
