OKALAWO
The vision of Okalawo is to create a place of safety where these children's lives can be transformed by the greater community and surrounding families in a holistic way that breaks the cycle of dysfunction and family breakdown.

We aim to do this in a way that trains communities in rural, urban and peri-urban areas to take care of orphaned and vulnerable children without dividing families or putting children in institutions. And also by using widow ladies to look after the children and create an environment for the ladies to feel safe and secured.

We have the vision and tools to reach the culture and society of Mozambique through these three main development areas; namely; education for orphaned and vulnerable children, rehabilitation of street children and discipleship and mentorship of children in prison. We seek to change the opportunities that these vulnerable young people are faced with, breaking the cycle of broken families and broken lives in our beloved Mozambique.

The Okalawo Community Villages ultimate goal will be to serve children in the area and their families and extended families in a holistic and life-transforming way.

The centre that we envisage will contain the following:

  1. Clinic
The on-site clinic will serve the basic health needs of all the children in the various residences, learners from the school, their families and substitute families, as well as the broader community.

  2. School
As education is one of the keys to the Okalawo Community Village the school will be one of the greater focus areas in the facility. It will initially consist of six classrooms facilitating 12 simultaneous classes of 20 children daily. This translates to 240 children in the morning, 240 in the afternoon, totalling 480 children in the education process on a daily basis. Disadvantaged children from the surrounding community will benefit from this school by receiving good education opportunities, as well as a nutritious meal each day.

  3. Residence
The residences made up of clusters of six homes that will each accommodate eight children each, will be open to children from the community for both short, mid and long-term accommodation needs.

  4. Multi-purpose Community Centre
The Community Centre will be used for religious celebrations, church meetings and wet weather sport etc. Community meetings and training may also take place here.

  5. Sports fields
Sports activities are vital in the healthy development of children and we have seen the impact of physical activity on behavioural issues. Sporting activities are used in the development of a variety of skills, including teamwork, recreation, physical and mental development, anger management and more.

  6. Agricultural Classrooms
This space will be used to facilitate agriculture and animal husbandry education where each child will receive both theoretical and practical skills training as part of the school curriculum. The purpose is to enable and equip each child towards income generation and job creation as they pursue opportunities in agriculture in their future.

  7. Agricultural Fields
We have seen, on a small scale, what a benefit growing fruit and vegetables are and have proven that it works. The produce will be used to feed the children and ensure that they are receiving nutritious meals. The surplus produce will be sold as part of the income generation strategy to ensure the sustainability of the centre.

  8. Animal Yards
The three animal yards will house milking goats, pigs, chickens and other farm animals that will be used in the education process, as well as providing milk, meat and eggs for the centre and broader community
